What you are actually going to see
El Castillo is the postcard. Around it: the great ball court, the temple of the warriors, the sacred cenote, and a market of stalls that starts the moment you exit. Two and a half hours on site is enough if you arrive before the first coaches. Four hours in the midday sun is not more culture. It is just hotter.
INAH and state tickets are two charges sold together at the gate. We pre-buy them in your name so you skip the main line. Climbing has been closed for years. A guide who says otherwise is not your guide.
Cancun to Chichen Itza, the sensible way
You can rent a car. The highway is fine and the site has parking. You can also join a bus and lose the morning. The private day is the middle: someone else drives, you still set the pace, and a cenote is on the route home instead of a silver shop.
Wear a hat, closed shoes for the limestone, and a swimsuit under your clothes. The plaza has almost no shade. Water is in the van before you ask.
How far is Chichen Itza from Cancun Airport, and the entrance fee
How far is Chichen Itza from Cancun airport: about 200 km and close to three hours once you leave the terminal. From a Hotel Zone lobby it is about 2.5 hours if you leave early. The best time to visit Chichen Itza is a clear morning that is not the equinox. The serpent shadow is famous. The crowd is not.
The Chichen Itza entrance fee is two tickets sold together. On a saver seat, transport is separate and an adult still pays about $42 at the gate, $29 for a child. On the regular shared day from $170, the site ticket is already in the rate.
